Arsenal have come close to reaching a full agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães during the current summer transfer window.

According to David Ornstein, journalist at The Athletic, Arsenal have come close to reaching a final agreement with Newcastle to sign the team captain.

Newcastle value Guimarães at more than £80 million, but there is a desire from all parties to conclude the negotiations successfully, with significant progress made in the deal.

Guimarães is currently with Newcastle at the team's pre-season training camp in the Spanish city of La Manga, but he is waiting to receive permission to undergo a medical and complete his move to the Emirates Stadium.

The Brazilian international's contract with Newcastle runs until the summer of 2028, yet he has come close to leaving after informing the club's management of his desire to join Arsenal.

Guimarães joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 and became one of the team's most important players, while also gaining a significant standing among the club's fans.

The midfielder has played 153 matches in the Premier League wearing the Newcastle shirt, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists, and played a prominent role in the team's victory in the 2025 EFL Cup.

Newcastle had already agreed this summer to sell Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, making the potential departure of their captain another blow to the team.

Nevertheless, Newcastle's management may see selling the player now for this large financial return as the best opportunity to achieve the highest yield, given that he is approaching the final stages of the peak of his footballing career.

Guimarães, who participated with the Brazil national team in the 2026 World Cup, is one of Arsenal's main targets this summer, amid manager Mikel Arteta's desire to bolster the midfield before the start of the new season.

This comes at the same time as the imminent departure of Danish player Christian Nørgaard, after Arsenal reached an agreement with Everton regarding his transfer and the player received permission to undergo a medical.

Reports had revealed that direct negotiations between Arsenal and Newcastle began earlier in the week, although the first verbal offer submitted by the London club was rejected.

However, Newcastle are awaiting an improved offer, amid growing optimism that the deal could be completed in the coming days.
