Arsenal and Newcastle United are close to reaching a final agreement on the transfer of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimarães during the current summer transfer window.
Newcastle had previously rejected a verbal offer from Arsenal worth less than £60 million, confirming they would not consider any other bids for the midfielder.
Arsenal close to signing Guimarães
According to The Athletic, Guimarães informed Newcastle of his desire to join Arsenal, who initially expressed willingness to pay up to £60 million to sign him.
However, all parties now want to complete the deal, which is on track, and the Brazilian midfielder is awaiting approval to undergo a medical and complete his move to the Gunners.
Guimarães is currently in Spain with his Newcastle teammates at the team's pre-season training camp in La Manga.
The 28-year-old has two years left on his contract with Newcastle, having signed a five-year deal in October 2023 that included a temporary release clause worth £100 million, which expired in June 2024 without being triggered.
Bruno represents the latest high-profile departure from Newcastle this summer, following the resignation of manager Eddie Howe, who is set to be replaced by Matthias Jaissle, the coach of Al Ahli Saudi.
Additionally, Newcastle sold their international winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80 million and midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £100 million.
The report noted that the Brazilian player fits many of the requirements of Spanish manager Mikel Arteta for the midfield position, even though convincing Newcastle to sell him would be difficult.
Guimarães previously joined Newcastle from French club Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 in a deal worth €50 million including add-ons.
The Brazilian star has played 153 Premier League matches for the club, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists, and was also part of the team that won the Carabao Cup in 2025.
The midfielder featured in 41 matches across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists, and started in all five of Brazil's matches at the 2026 World Cup, creating four goals.
