Croatian international Josko Gvardiol, defender of English club Manchester City, admitted he was certain he was in an offside position during the scene of his goal against Bournemouth.
The Croatian star scored a crucial goal to lead the Citizens to a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday evening, in the first round of the English Premier League season.
The match referee initially disallowed the goal for offside, but later awarded it after reviewing the video assistant referee (VAR) footage.
Gvardiol comments on his goal in the Manchester City vs. Bournemouth match
Gvardiol said in post-match remarks quoted by Manchester City's official website: "Everyone is proud right now; it's the season opener, and we understand its importance, especially given all the changes we've experienced in recent weeks."
He added: "We must enjoy this victory; we deserve it, and I am happy with the three points."
He continued: "Honestly, I was completely sure I was offside, but it's difficult; in that moment, you just wait for the referee's reaction."
He concluded: "Every match is important, especially here in England. I think the most important thing is that we won today. There's another match ahead, away against Crystal Palace, and it will be tough too."
