Michael Carrick, Manchester United's manager, emphasized that his team's loss to Hull City in the opening match of the English Premier League will not alter the club's trajectory, affirming that there are certain issues requiring adjustments.
Manchester United fell to Hull City by two goals to nil in the first round of the English Premier League. Carrick stated in remarks to England's "TNT Sport" network: "We have several aspects that need improvement; it wasn't expected that everything would be perfect. Falling behind in the scoreline makes the match more difficult, especially against a newly promoted team playing at home. We cannot afford to give them many opportunities, yet they managed to create some. We feel disappointed, but this defeat will not affect us." He continued, "Conceding two goals is frustrating under any circumstances, and these two goals ultimately decided today's match. There are things we need to improve, but one single game will not change everything nor alter the club's course." Concluding his comments regarding the possibility of signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton, he said: "I was fully focused on today's match; therefore, concerning any other player, as long as he is not one of our players, it is not appropriate for me to comment on him." Hull City's two goals were scored by Semi Ajayi and Noble Mendy.
The match witnessed Marcus Rashford, Manchester United's forward, making his first appearance for the Red Devils in the English Premier League since December 7, 2024, at the beginning of the second half.
Hull City scored in the English Premier League for the first time since netting during their 7-1 defeat against Tottenham in 2017.
This victory marks Hull City's first-ever historic win against Manchester United.
For the first time in their history, Manchester United lost their opening match of a Premier League season against a newly promoted team, having previously won 10 out of their first 13 matches, with three draws.
