The management of Saudi club Al-Hilal has decided to release French star Karim Benzema this summer, as the administration wishes to sign another striker, with Aston Villa player Ollie Watkins considered one of the top candidates.
Benzema, 38 years old, joined the capital club during the previous winter transfer window from Saudi club Al-Ittihad, where he holds a contract that expires in the summer of 2027.
Al-Hilal's management offered Benzema the option of either participating in the Asian tournament or terminating the contract with a financial settlement, but the veteran Frenchman did not welcome this offer. Read the details
Saudi newspaper "Asharq Al-Awsat" revealed several surprises within Al-Hilal regarding Benzema's departure, disclosing that the "Leader's" management will not proceed with a unilateral contract termination.
The newspaper added that the figures circulating on social media platforms regarding the financial amounts Benzema will receive are entirely incorrect, clarifying that the player's contract is valued at $25 million.
The newspaper indicated that the player is entitled to receive approximately $21 million, after having received part of his dues in the current month of August.
According to sources, Al-Hilal's management will not bear the cost of the other contract linking Benzema to the Saudi Pro League's recruitment program, which extends until 2030.
This contract contains several surprises, starting with Benzema's right to receive $23 million annually, alongside a clause stating that he must play only for Saudi clubs; if he transfers outside the Saudi league, the contract will be void.
Benzema played 16 matches for Al-Hilal, scoring 10 goals and providing 5 assists. Prior to that, he played 83 matches for Al-Ittihad, scoring 54 goals and providing 17 assists, according to the global website "Transfermarkt".
