Antonio Rüdiger, the star of Spain's Real Madrid, has decided to end his career with the German national team, as the veteran defender believes it is time to turn the page on a chapter that formed a major part of his football journey and to focus entirely on his club.
Rüdiger wore the German national team jersey for over 12 years, beginning his international career with "Die Mannschaft" in 2014. He played 86 matches across all tournaments (7,192 minutes), scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists.
Rüdiger Announces Retirement from International Football with Germany
Rüdiger posted on his "X" platform account, stating: "After deep reflection, the time has come for me to conclude my career with the national team and make way for the next generation."
He added: "When I first wore the German national team jersey in 2014, I could never have even dreamed that it would lead me to play 86 international matches."
He continued: "Although we did not win a major title in recent tournaments and suffered some painful defeats, this period was an exceptionally distinctive chapter for me—a chapter that will affect me forever."
The Real Madrid star went on to say: "Many thanks to my teammates in the national team for every challenge we faced together, for the team spirit in the locker room, for our accommodations, and above all, for the friendships that will endure long after my football career ends."
He added: "To all members of the technical and administrative staff, I say thank you for your years of trust and tireless efforts behind the scenes. Special thanks to coaches Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick, and Julian Nagelsmann, who accompanied me and influenced my career with the national team."
He further stated: "I also thank my mentors in the youth national teams, specifically coach Horst Hrubesch, and of course, to you, the fans, thank you for your support, especially for the wonderful atmosphere that surrounded us during Euro 2024 on home soil."
The veteran defender concluded: "A new chapter in my life begins now, in which I will focus entirely on my club. Thank you for this wonderful journey, with my sincerest regards."
Why Did Rüdiger Decide to Retire Internationally?
The idea of retiring from the German national team began to take shape after the last World Cup, as Rüdiger preferred not to rush into anything, choosing instead to analyze his situation calmly and wait before making his final decision.
After years of representing Germany and being one of its standout players, he recognizes that his career with the national team has reached its end and that it is time to step aside. Thus, Rüdiger leaves the German national team after more than a decade as an international player, crowned with the 2017 Confederations Cup title.
The central defender realizes that his departure will facilitate this transitional phase and give the new head coach, Jürgen Klopp, the opportunity to build a new project from scratch, with fresh leadership and aspirations focused on the next generation of the national team.
