Press reports revealed that there is a significant trend within the Algerian Football Federation towards dismissing Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic from coaching the national team, following the disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup.

The Algerian national team exited the 2026 World Cup competition, losing to Switzerland, two goals to nil, in the round of 32, at the "BC Place" stadium, with a weak performance, contrary to expectations.

The Algerian national team is planning to oust its coach Petkovic

According to the Algerian newspaper "Al-Nahar," the Algerian Football Federation is looking for a way to terminate its contract with the Swiss coach amicably, following the World Cup exit.

Algerian federation officials discussed the possibility of reaching an amicable agreement with Petkovic, by granting him six months' salary, and then terminating the contract between them, and appointing another coach in the coming period.

Petkovic was previously appointed as the coach of the Algerian national team in February 2024, and he reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the team, and the round of 32 of the current World Cup.

The Algerian national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic, receives a monthly salary of about 160,000 euros, after extending his contract and increasing his previous salary, which was 135,000 euros.

If the Algerian federation reaches an agreement with the Swiss coach and then pays 6 months of his salary, the first party will have to provide approximately 1 million euros to Petkovic.

A month ago, the Algerian federation extended its contractual relationship with coach Petkovic for two years, a decision that came after lengthy negotiations, focusing on proving his technical capabilities in the World Cup.
