FIFA announced the selection of Sydney Lopez Cabral's goal, the Cape Verde player against Argentina in the round of 32, as the best goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The goal came after Cabral skillfully dribbled past the Argentine star Alexis Mac Allister and shot the ball with superb skill into the top corner of Emiliano Martinez's goal, equalizing the score at (2-2) in the match that Lionel Messi's teammates won (3-2) in extra time.
"FIFA" announced via its official website crowning this goal with the "Hyundai" award as the best goal in the tournament by fan vote, surpassing two wonderful goals from the Uzbek Eldor Shomurodov against the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Haitian Wilson Isidore against Morocco, which came in second and third place respectively.
This goal also outperformed other goals that reached the finals, such as Kylian Mbappe's goal against Senegal, Lionel Messi's goal against Algeria, Julian Alvarez's goal against Switzerland, and Ferran Torres' decisive goal in the final match against Argentina.
Cape Verde's national team participated in the 2026 World Cup for the first time, and succeeded in advancing past the group stage, before exiting the tournament with a loss to Argentina in the round of 32.
It is noted that Spain won the world title for the second time in its history, after defeating Argentina (1-0), in the final match that went to extra time.
