Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced his international retirement following recent disputes with the Gabonese government.

Numerous disputes arose between the Gabonese government and Aubameyang after the humiliating exit from the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Gabon national team lost all three of their matches in the Africa Cup of Nations, in a group that included Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Mozambique.

Aubameyang said, in remarks carried by the newspaper "Marca": "They humiliated me and tarnished my image when I played in the Africa Cup of Nations while injured."

He added: "It was the straw that broke the camel's back, and it is best to stop here and not continue."

Aubameyang's anger stems from the Gabonese government dismissing the technical staff and suspending the national team until further notice, while accusing Aubameyang of negligence and failure.

Aubameyang enjoyed a very rich career, having worn the shirts of Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea.
