The Australian Football Federation supported Tony Popovic, the national team coach, after exiting the 2026 World Cup.
The Australian team exited the 2026 World Cup at the hands of the Egyptian team via penalty shootout (4-2) after the regular and extra time ended in a draw (1-1) in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.
The Egyptian team qualified for the Round of 16 of the World Cup to face Argentina next Tuesday.
The Australian Federation supports Popovic
Martin Kugeler, the CEO of the Australian Federation, said in a press statement: "Every fan will think about what could be done better, but the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are always in the best position to judge at that moment what is needed for the team."
He added: "Later on, everyone always knows best, but you have to make those decisions in the moment based on what you saw in training and your impression when talking to the players."
He confirmed: "So, Tony Popovic has our full confidence."
He concluded: "He is the right person now to lead this group to the next major tournament and apply all the experiences and lessons learned from this tournament in the next major tournament."
