Liverpool began their journey under the leadership of their new technical director Andoni Iraola with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in a friendly match held at Geodis Park in the American city of Nashville.
Despite the positives Iraola took from the match, the early injury to defender Joe Gomez cast a shadow over the game.
Gomez was forced to leave the pitch after just eight minutes, with Iraola describing his injury as the "worst news" for the team.
Iraola said in remarks reported by The Guardian: "Perhaps the worst news was Joe's injury from the start."
He added: "We were happy that we trained without losing any players, but unfortunately we lost Joe straight away."
Evan Ndowu came on for Gomez and performed well alongside Maur Tala Ndaye, while Callum Scanlon, Kieran Morrison and Lewis Comas caught the eye with their performances during the match.
Iraola had earlier acknowledged that Liverpool are short of defensive options, especially after Ibrahim Konate's departure to Real Madrid this summer.
Team captain Virgil van Dijk is expected to return to training next week, but he will not join the squad's trip to the United States and will continue his preparation programme at the AXA Training Centre.
Gomez remains an important player thanks to his ability to play in multiple defensive positions, but his recurring injuries have become a growing concern within the club and could prompt the board to consider selling him if a suitable offer arrives.
The report suggests that signing one or two centre-backs, along with strengthening the wing position, should be among Liverpool's priorities in the summer transfer window, especially amid fan concern over the club's slow activity in the market.
The English defender has suffered a series of injuries over the past two seasons, and although he featured in 21 Premier League matches last season, most were as a substitute.
Meanwhile, defender Jeremy Jacquet, who joined this summer from Rennes for £55 million, was left out of the matchday squad as a precautionary measure before kick-off.
Jacquet had missed the second half of last season with a shoulder injury, but he is expected to feature in Liverpool's final pre-season match on their US tour.
