Former Manchester United defender on the verge of joining Porto

Chris Smalling, the former Manchester United and England defender, is in talks with Porto, the leaders of the Portuguese league.

The player has been without a club since leaving Al-Fayha, who compete in the Saudi Pro League, last summer.

The 36-year-old had been linked with a move to Rangers, but that transfer did not materialize.

According to the BBC, the deal with Porto has not yet been finalized, although reports indicate that negotiations have reached an advanced stage.

Porto have won all seven of their league matches this season and currently hold a five-point advantage over second-placed Benfica.

Francesco Farioli's side lost at home to Manchester City in their opening Champions League match.

Smalling is looking to continue his 19-year professional career, which began at non-league club Maidstone.

He then played for Fulham and Manchester United, where he won five major trophies, including two Premier League titles.

He also wore the shirt of Roma, winning the Europa Conference League under manager Jose Mourinho in 2022.

The player earned 31 caps for the England national team.
