FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed a study to increase the number of teams in the 2030 World Cup edition.
The current edition of the 2026 World Cup was held with the participation of 48 teams.
Infantino said in an interview with the Swiss website Bluewin: "Increasing the World Cup to 64 teams is certainly an issue that will be studied and discussed in the relevant committees after the end of the World Cup".
He added: Every country must have the opportunity to dream of participating in the World Cup. The level of teams is constantly rising in various parts of the world, and if small countries do not get the opportunity to participate, they will lose the incentive to continue developing.
He concluded: "If small countries are not given the opportunity to participate in the World Cup, they will lack the incentive to continue improving".
Gianni Infantino confirmed that the current edition of the World Cup witnessed a remarkable success, after increasing the number of teams to 48.
The 2030 tournament will be held across six countries and three continents: Uruguay, the host country of the 1930 tournament, Argentina, the winner of the 2022 tournament, and Paraguay are scheduled to host one match each at the beginning of the tournament, with the remaining matches (101 matches for a tournament featuring 48 teams) to be divided between Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.
