English press reports have revealed the latest developments in the physical condition of English star Declan Rice, ahead of England's anticipated match against Mexico in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, confirming that the player is expected to be ready to participate in the match despite suffering from ongoing pain.
According to the English newspaper Metro, Rice has been dealing with this issue for about six months, and it is likely that he will continue to participate despite the pain, as the medical staff relies on managing his condition rather than fully treating it during the tournament.
For his part, Stephen Smith, CEO of a company specializing in injury care, explained that substituting Rice against the Democratic Republic of the Congo and using ice packs were among the precautionary measures to ensure his readiness for the next match.
He added that nerve pain differs from muscle injuries, as it may last for two or three days after each match, which explains Rice's continued feeling of pain even with his ability to play.
Rice's physical condition has raised concerns since the start of the tournament, after he endured a tough season with Arsenal, during which he played more minutes than any other player, in addition to suffering from a nerve issue since the beginning of the year that affected his lower back and hamstrings.
The 27-year-old participated in the opening match against Croatia before leaving the field, then maintained his place in the starting lineup against Ghana, while he missed the match against Panama.
Rice returned to participate in the victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Round of 32, but raised concerns again after he was seen applying ice packs to his knee after leaving the match.
England's head coach, Thomas Tuchel, commented on Rice's condition earlier, saying: "I asked him and he told me I can do it for the team, but I am in severe pain. When Declan tells you he is in severe pain, you know it has reached its limits."
