Al-Hilal's management has decided to mutually terminate the contract of veteran French striker Karim Benzema, as the player has fallen out of favor with Italian coach Simone Inzaghi.
The Saudi newspaper "Asharq Al-Awsat" reported on Sunday in an exclusive story that Al-Hilal decided to end Benzema's contract by mutual consent, although it was originally set to run until the end of the season.
The 38-year-old joined the "Leader of Asia" during the last winter transfer window, coming from Al-Ittihad Club; however, the French player's contract with Al-Hilal did not continue, per the capital club's wishes.
The Saudi newspaper indicated that relations between Al-Hilal and Benzema over the past three days witnessed intense negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement between both parties regarding the Frenchman's future and finding a formula to terminate the contractual relationship.
The newspaper also revealed that Benzema expressed his anger in recent days, given the capital club's desire to terminate the contract, while the French player wished to continue his mission until his contract expired.
The newspaper clarified that Benzema's contract with the Saudi Pro League, which extends until 2030, remains valid despite his inclination toward retirement.
Earlier, "Asharq Al-Awsat" reported in recent hours that Benzema refused to join Al-Shabab, despite the "Capital Lions'" desire to recruit the player.
According to the global website "Transfermarkt," Benzema participated in 16 matches for Al-Hilal, scoring ten goals and providing five assists.
Benzema's departure came after Al-Hilal reached an agreement with English international striker Ollie Watkins to sign him from Aston Villa.
The "Capital Blues" are striving to compete for titles this season, whether in the Saudi Pro League and the King's Cup, as well as in the Asian competition, the AFC Elite Champions League.
