L'Equipe newspaper reported that Frenchman Patrick Vieira is a candidate to coach the Senegal national team in the coming period.

The Senegalese Federation announced the dismissal of Pape Thiao from his position as technical director of the Teranga Lions hours ago.

L'Equipe mentioned that Vieira's name is among the frontrunners to take over the position.

The report pointed out that Vieira, who was born in the Senegalese capital Dakar, enjoys great esteem within the country, and he also contributed to the establishment of the "Diambar" Academy, one of the most prominent player development centers in Senegal.

The report added that the Senegalese Federation is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting of the executive committee to settle the file of the new coach.

The former Arsenal captain has coached several teams, such as New York City, Nice, Strasbourg, Crystal Palace, and Genoa.

The Senegalese Federation announced the dismissal of Pape Thiao from coaching the Senegal national team after exiting the World Cup in the round of 32.

The Teranga Lions exited the World Cup after losing 3-2 to Belgium despite leading 2-0 until the 86th minute.

The Senegalese Federation announced in its statement that it will hold a meeting with the media on Monday, July 13, "to explain the reasons for this decision, provide the latest updates on the team's status, and discuss future prospects."

Thiao took over coaching Senegal succeeding his compatriot Aliou Cissé in October 2024.

During 25 matches, Senegal under his leadership won 15 matches, drew 4, and lost 6 in all competitions.

Senegal crowned with Thiao the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, but it was withdrawn from it by a decision from the African Confederationdue to the coach's decision to withdraw before achieving victory over Morocco.

Senegal national team player Pape Gueye had previously announced that he would not play for the national team unless Thiao leaves after the World Cup exit. (See details)
