The Egyptian delegation concluded its participation in the "Taranto 2026" Mediterranean Games, hosted by the Italian city of Taranto, by achieving a new milestone for Egyptian sports after winning 58 various medals.
The Egyptian delegation succeeded in securing 23 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 19 bronze medals, marking a distinguished record for Egypt in terms of the number of gold medals throughout its history of participating in the Mediterranean Games.
Egypt's tally of gold medals in Taranto 2026 equaled the figure achieved by the Egyptian delegation during the Beirut Games in 1959.
Joher Nabil, Minister of Youth and Sports, affirmed that what the Egyptian delegation achieved at the Mediterranean Games constitutes a historic accomplishment reflecting the development witnessed by Egyptian sports, especially since these results were attained despite participating with fewer athletes compared to previous editions.
The Minister of Youth and Sports stated that the results achieved by Egypt's champions confirm that Egyptian sports are on the right track, noting that participation in Taranto represents an important step within the preparation plan for upcoming major events, foremost among them the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
He clarified that this achievement resulted from cooperation and coordination between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Egyptian Olympic Committee, and the sports federations, alongside the tremendous efforts exerted by the athletes, technical staff, administrative bodies, and medical teams.
The total of 58 medals won by Egypt in Taranto 2026 ranks as the fourth-best haul in the history of its participation in the Mediterranean Games, following Beirut 1959 with 74 medals, Mersin 2013 with 67 medals, and Alexandria 1951 with 65 medals.
The Egyptian delegation participated in competitions across 23 sports during the games, reflecting the diversity of Egyptian participation and the broad base of competition in various disciplines.
