The German Football Association announced the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, the team's coach, after the disappointment of exiting the 2026 World Cup.
The German Association revealed in an official statement today, Friday, about a secret meeting held between Nagelsmann and the association's leaders, in which the coach expressed his desire to end the contractual relationship, which was agreed upon by the board of directors.
Bernd Neuendorf, the president of the association, said, "The German Football Association extends its sincere thanks to Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023. He is characterized by a high level of commitment and exceptional ambition. Julian Nagelsmann is also a very responsible and loyal person, and we all appreciate him."
Nagelsmann explained, "I thought about the days following our exit from the tournament and consulted people I trust, both personally and within the association. The decision was not easy at all. My top priority has always been the team's success."
He continued, "After this bitter disappointment, they deserve a chance for a new beginning. I would like to thank the technical staff and everyone who supported us in the association, especially the players I had the honor to work with. Special thanks also to the fans. You have been our support, trusted us, and gave us energy, even in the toughest times."
The German Association's statement mentioned that the association's leaders are in talks with Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool and Dortmund coach, to take over the leadership of the Mannschaft.
The statement clarified that Klopp has already expressed his readiness to take the position.
The German national team exited the World Cup from the round of 32 after losing to Paraguay on penalties 4-3, following a draw in regular and extra time 1-1.
This is the first time in history that the German national team has lost on penalties, after winning all four previous penalty shootouts.
