Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Romero climbed onto the podium to receive the silver medal, but he passed Trump without shaking his hand, while shaking hands with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in footage captured by broadcast cameras that quickly spread across social media.
The Argentine defender did not comment on the incident or reveal the reasons for his actions, leaving his motives open to speculation, though the moment appeared deliberate, especially as he passed in front of the US President without offering any greeting.
The newspaper noted that Romero has been known throughout his career for his strong personality both on and off the pitch, which was also reflected in this situation, after he was one of the key pillars in coach Lionel Scaloni's squad during Argentina's run to the World Cup final for the second consecutive time.
It added that Trump's attendance at the trophy ceremony gave the event a political dimension alongside its sporting character, turning Romero's moment into one of the most controversial scenes at the end of the tournament, even though the spotlight was supposed to be on Spain's crowning as champions.
