A report from the "Mirror" newspaper indicated that red cards usually result in a one-match suspension for the player, but Quansah was punished with a two-match suspension; following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after his strong tackle on Mexican player Jesús Gallardo.
This decision is likely to anger the English Football Association, after FIFA ignored the sending off of Folarin Balogun to allow him to play with the United States, following an intervention from President Donald Trump, an incident that caused a state of confusion within FIFA and serious accusations of double standards.
The report noted that there is no right to direct appeal on sending-off decisions in the World Cup, but the English Association is studying its options as a direct result of FIFA's leniency with Balogun, after Trump's call to Swiss Gianni Infantino.
For its part, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee issued a two-match suspension against Quansah ahead of the match against Norway; as the committee's regulations considered the English defender's obstruction as a "serious violent tackle".
Quansah's suspension represents a technical dilemma for coach Thomas Tuchel on the defensive line; although Reece James is the ideal solution to fill the starting position, he is racing against time to recover before facing Norway after missing the last three matches for the Three Lions due to a hamstring injury.
The "Mirror" noted that Tuchel may rely on one of the trio Djed Spence or Ezri Konsa or John Stones to compensate for the absence, and he can also resort to a five-man defensive plan, which succeeded in the final minutes of the match against Mexico after the numerical deficit.
Controlling the danger of Norway's striker Erling Haaland will be a top priority for the Three Lions national team in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final match, which may push Tuchel to rely on players with strong defensive qualities.
