Manchester City dealt a strong blow to Real Madrid's ambitions in the transfer market, after announcing the renewal of their defender's contract for an additional five years, allowing him to continue his career at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031, in a move that confirms the English club's commitment to one of its most prominent defenders.
Croatian player Joško Gvardiol's name had been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent weeks, after the Spanish newspaper "AS" revealed that the player was offered to the Royal Club, which greatly admires his technical abilities and defensive capabilities. However, Manchester City quickly settled the matter by renewing their Croatian star's contract.
Manchester City announced that Joško Gvardiol had signed a new five-year contract, keeping the player tied to the club until the summer of 2031.
Since joining City from Leipzig in the summer of 2023, the Croatian defender has established himself as one of the best defenders in European football, thanks to his consistent performances and his ability to play in more than one position in the backline.
Gvardiol is 24 years old and excels at playing in central defence, in addition to his great abilities at left-back, where he has delivered outstanding performances that have made him one of the team's standout players.
Gvardiol has so far played 122 matches for Manchester City, scoring 13 goals, figures that reflect his attacking contributions alongside his defensive roles.
During his time with the team, he contributed to winning six major titles: the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield.
He has also become a key player for the Croatian national team, having played in 52 international matches and being part of Croatia's squad at the World Cup finals.
I did not hesitate to accept the renewal
Gvardiol expressed his great happiness at signing the new contract, confirming that his desire had been clear from the very first moment.
The Croatian defender said: "As soon as I learned of Manchester City's desire to renew my contract, I immediately knew that this was what I wanted. City's fans have been wonderful with me from day one, and the club provides everything for the players. It is the best place any player could be."
He added: "I have received a lot of love and respect over the past three years, and I appreciate that greatly and do not take it for granted. The players here are amazing; it is a world-class, young squad full of potential. I truly believe we will achieve great successes in the years ahead."
For his part, Hugo Viana, Manchester City's director of football, confirmed that the club was keen to secure the future of the Croatian defender, given the great value he represents within the team.
He said: "Joško is a player the club strongly believes in. He is a young man with high professionalism and is already one of the best defenders in the world. Manchester City is committed to retaining its best talents, which is why we are extremely happy to have reached an agreement on this new contract."
The club's director of football continued: "Joško embodies everything we look for in defenders; he can play in more than one position, possesses speed and strength, and offers a distinctive attacking contribution. He is an exceptional player."
He concluded his remarks by saying: "In addition to his technical abilities, Joško has a wonderful personality and a professional mindset that always drives him to give his best, which aligns perfectly with the club's vision. We congratulate him on signing this new contract and look forward to helping him fulfil his full potential in the years ahead."
