The Belgian national team received a painful blow before facing Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals, after the Belgian Football Association announced the absence of defender Zeno Debast from the match, based on a decision from his club Sporting Lisbon, which considered him medically unfit to participate.
The Belgian Association explained, in a statement sent from the Belgian national team to journalists, that the club's assessment conflicts with the opinion of the medical staff of the "Red Devils" national team, as well as with the assessment of the medical and insurance bodies affiliated with the International Football Association "FIFA", which saw no obstacle to the player's participation.
The statement added that Debast is currently continuing his rehabilitation program and is training individually under the supervision of the performance department at the Royal Belgian Football Association.
The Belgian defender had suffered an injury before joining the national team camp, but the technical and medical staff insisted on including him in the team's squad participating in the World Cup.
The Belgian national team will meet its Spanish counterpart at ten o'clock tomorrow evening, Friday, in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
