Al-Ittihad Jeddah club has approached signing Luxembourgian Leonardo Barreiro, Benfica's midfielder, during the current summer transfer window, according to the Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiya.
The report clarified that the club's management is currently engaged in advanced negotiations with its counterpart at Benfica on a deal worth 15 million euros, to be scheduled flexibly.
The deal's path is expected to be determined in the coming days, according to the report.
If the deal is completed, the international midfielder is expected to sign a contract with Al-Ittihad Jeddah extending for 4 seasons.
Barreiro - 26 years old - is considered one of the most prominent players of his national team in recent years, and began his career at Racing Union academy, then moved to the youth categories at German Mainz in 2016.
The player made his way to Mainz's first team in 2019, and defended its colors for five seasons, in which he played 141 matches in the German league, and scored 11 goals before leaving, in the summer of 2024, to Portuguese Benfica in a free transfer deal after the end of his contract.
With the Portuguese team, Barreiro participated in 58 official matches in various competitions, during which he scored 6 goals, made 6 assists, and contributed to winning the local league title, as well as participating with it in the UEFA Champions League and the Club World Cup.
As for the international level, Leonardo has represented the Luxembourg national team since 2018, and played 73 matches for it, scoring two goals during them.
