The Mexican Federation announced the appointment of Rafael Marquez as technical director of the Mexican national team, succeeding Javier Aguirre.
This came after the end of Mexico's journey in the 2026 World Cup by exiting in the round of 16 at the hands of England.
Marquez worked as an assistant coach in Aguirre's technical staff.
Marquez's appointment comes during the Mexican sports project 2030.

Aguirre led Mexico's training in a third term, and during 37 matches he won 22, drew 9 and lost 6.
The Mexican national team scored 50 goals and conceded 28 under his leadership.
Under his leadership, Mexico won the 2024-2025 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2025 Gold Cup. In the 2026 World Cup, it secured ninth place in the tournament.

This will be Marquez's first technical experience at the senior level after coaching Real Alcala juniors then Barcelona youth before joining as an assistant coach to Aguirre.
Marquez had a great career as a player with the Mexican national team, participating in 5 World Cup editions in addition to winning the 1999 Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup in 2003 and 2011.
He also played for the clubs Monaco, Barcelona, New York Red Bulls, Hellas Verona and Atlas.
The Mexican national team's first match next September will be under Marquez's leadership.
