The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo revealed that the state of controversy that accompanied some decisions during the 2026 World Cup competitions may cast a shadow over the future of Gianni Infantino, president of the International Federation of Football.
The newspaper explained that the tournament witnessed in the past days a number of controversial incidents, including the decision to cancel the suspension of the American Folarin Balogun, which allowed him to participate with the United States national team in the quarter-final match against Belgium.
It added that the Argentina-Egypt match in the round of 16 also entered among the files that sparked widespread discussion, due to the refereeing decisions taken by French referee François Letexier during the match.
Mundo Deportivo pointed out that these incidents have placed the refereeing decisions and tournament management under the spotlight, and may have an impact on Infantino's future within the International Federation of Football.
