Hugo Broos announced his departure from coaching the South African national team after a period of ambiguity surrounding his future.
The 74-year-old coach had hinted before the tournament about his retirement, but he temporarily reversed his decision after the exit against Canada in the round of 32, indicating the possibility of his continuation.
Broos said in statements reported by Reuters agency: "Will I continue as a coach? No, the decision is final".
He added, "If they need me in another role like scouting, that's a different matter, but football will no longer be part of my life all day long after now".
He continued, "I spoke with the president of the South African Federation, and he wants me to continue but in a different role as an advisor".
He concluded: "I will return at the end of July to bid farewell to everyone in a final manner, and I will see what will be offered to me".
Broos led the South African national team for 5 years, becoming the longest-serving coach in the position, and also succeeded in qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years.
He concluded his statements, "My wife is happy with my decision, but she warned me against being a burden at home, so I might accept short-term work if the opportunity arises".
