Press reports indicated on Tuesday that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the European Club Association are studying the possibility of boycotting the Club World Cup in an attempt to escalate against FIFA.
UEFA condemned FIFA President Gianni Infantino's proposal regarding the sale of the World Cup.
The Spanish newspaper Marca reported that UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is trying to convince European Club Association President Nasser Al-Khelaifi to take stricter positions, including the possibility of boycotting the Club World Cup, after the clubs' anger due to not receiving any financial compensation for their players' participation in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
According to Marca, the European Club Association has currently ruled out the boycott option, noting that there is no agreement or final arrangements regarding the 2029 edition of the tournament, and therefore there is no practical step that can be taken against it at the present time.
The European Club Association, which includes more than 800 clubs, seeks to unify its position with UEFA in confronting what European clubs consider an overreach of its role in making decisions related to club competitions and players' rights.
Ceferin is scheduled to meet with Nasser Al-Khelaifi, President of the European Club Association, during the European Super Cup final in the Austrian city of Salzburg on August 12, in a meeting that may discuss the next steps in dealing with FIFA.
