Hani Abu Rida, President of the Egyptian Football Association, announced today, Thursday, the submission of an official request to "CAF" to increase the number of clubs participating in the African Champions League and Confederation Cup tournaments.
According to the results of last season in the Egyptian League, Zamalek and Pyramids will participate in the African Champions League, and Al-Ahly along with Zed or Ceramica Cleopatra in the Confederation during the competitions of the next season "2026-2027".
The Football Association said in an official statement that in light of the achievements made by the African federations participating in the 2026 World Cup, Hani Abu Rida submitted an official request to the African Football Confederation (CAF), which includes a request to increase the number of clubs participating in both the African Champions League and the Confederation Cup.
This request includes granting each member federation an additional seat, provided that these seats are distributed according to the classification criteria and regulations approved by the continental federation.
Accordingly, the share of some federations, according to the applicable classification criteria, could rise to three clubs in the African Champions League and three clubs in the Confederation Cup, provided that the participation of the additional clubs begins from the preliminary rounds.
Consequently, Al-Ahly may participate in the African Champions League next season instead of the Confederation if "CAF" implements the Football Association's request.
The Egyptian national team had presented an exceptional and historic performance in the 2026 World Cup after reaching the round of 16 for the first time, but it bid farewell after losing to Argentina with a score of 3-2.
