Alfonso Perez, the Spanish arbitration expert, criticized the decision to cancel Egypt national team's goal in Argentina's net, in the ongoing match for the 2026 World Cup competitions.
The Argentine national team defeated its Egyptian counterpart, three goals to two, in the match that brought the two teams together, yesterday evening, Tuesday, at Atlanta Stadium, in the United States of America, for the round of 16 competitions in the 2026 World Cup.
While the Egyptian national team was leading the score with a goal without reply, Mustafa Zico scored a second goal for the Pharaohs, but it was canceled after returning to video technology, due to a foul on Marwan Attia, in favor of Lisandro Martinez, the Argentine player, at the edge of the Pharaohs' penalty area.
Alfonso Perez said in statements to the Spanish newspaper Marca that he does not understand the foul that was awarded in favor of Lisandro Martinez, which prompted the French referee, Francois Letexier, to cancel Egypt's second goal.
The former Spanish referee said: "These clips do not significantly affect the goal.. In a clip where the player runs the length of the field, it is not logical to go back to a previous clip and award a foul because of stepping on the player in slow motion".
Regarding Marwan Attia's intervention on Lisandro Martinez, he said: "It is not a clear or obvious foul, if the referee had awarded it at that moment, it would have been a foul, but once he allows play to continue, there is no point in going back to the previous clip".
