Spain defeats Austria and qualifies for the Round of 16 in the World Cup

The Spanish national team easily secured their qualification to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Austria 3-0.

The match between Spain and Austria was held at Los Angeles Stadium as part of the Round of 32 of the World Cup.

Match Details:

Spain entered the match with a lineup consisting of: "Unai Simón, Pedro Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella, Álex Baena, Rodri, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Oyarzabal, Lamine Yamal."

Austria's lineup was as follows: "Alexander Schlager - Stefan Posch - David Alaba - Kevin Danso - Konrad Laimer - Xaver Schlager - Nicolas Seiwald - Romano Schmid - Marcel Sabitzer - Paul Wanner - Michael Gregoritsch."

Spain imposed their control at the beginning of the match against Austria, but to no avail.

In the 29th minute, Cucurella scored the first goal for the Spanish team, but the referee disallowed it due to a foul by Cubarsí on the Austrian goalkeeper.

Spain's attempts continued after Lamine Yamal dribbled past the Austrian defense and penetrated, then fired a powerful shot, but the ball passed in front of the goal in the 32nd minute.

In the 49th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal fired a powerful shot, but it was saved by Alexander Schlager, the Austrian goalkeeper.

Pedro Porro scores the second goal

Spain managed to score the second goal in the 66th minute.

The second goal came after an attempt by Olmo to shoot the ball, which hit the foot of the Austrian defense and then reached Cucurella, who passed it to Álex Baena; he penetrated and sent a cross that Pedro Porro met with a powerful header into the Austrian net, making the score 2-0.

Oyarzabal scores the third goal

In the 89th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal added his second goal and the third for the Spanish team against Austria, giving the Matador a three-goal lead.

The match ended with Spain winning 3-0 against Austria, qualifying for the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The winner of the Spain vs. Austria match is scheduled to meet the winner of the Portugal vs. Croatia match in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

This is the first victory for the Spanish national team in the knockout stages since their win against the Netherlands in the 2010 final (i.e., 16 years ago).

Spain had been eliminated in the group stage in 2014, and in the Round of 16 via penalty shootouts against Russia in 2018 and Morocco in 2022.
