Cristiano Ronaldo, star of the Portuguese national team, broke the curse that had haunted him in World Cup competitions, specifically in the knockout stages, through the match against Croatia in the 2026 World Cup edition.

Ronaldo scored the equalizer for his country against Croatia from a penalty kick in the 68th minute of the match.

The referee awarded a penalty to the Portuguese team after consulting the video assistant referee, due to a foul by defender Renato Veiga.

The Portuguese striker had scored a goal minutes earlier, but the referee disallowed it for offside.

Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, had never scored or assisted in any knockout stage match of the World Cup throughout his history with the national team.
