Argentina international Cristian Romero stated that wearing the captain's armband for the Albiceleste after Lionel Messi is an enormous responsibility.
Messi announced his retirement from international football, with his final match in the Argentina jersey scheduled against Benin next Tuesday.
Romero told TYC network: "We will miss Messi, Argentina's true leader, for the rest of our lives. We will never have another player like Leo. He is the greatest player in history."
He added, "I never imagined I would become the captain of the Argentine national team. It is a huge responsibility, but I feel ready for it."
The Atletico Madrid defender continued, "Messi was a role model for all of us. He always taught us how to get back up again."
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni chose Cristian Romero to be the captain of the national team following Messi's retirement.

In his first match as captain, he managed to score a goal in the friendly against Bolivia.
The Argentine national team achieved a big 4-0 victory over Bolivia in their first appearance since losing the World Cup final last July.
The match was played at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium, allowing Argentina to continue its impressive form by securing its 15th win in the last 16 international matches.

This was the first of two friendlies that Argentina will play before focusing on the anticipated clash against Benin on October 6, which will see Lionel Messi's final international appearance.
Before the match, Lionel Scaloni confirmed that no player would wear the number 10 shirt until after Messi's farewell game, amid speculation that Nico Paz is among the top candidates to succeed the Argentine captain in the future.
