Reports confirmed that Dutchman Mark van Bommel is on the verge of taking over the technical management of the Belgian national team, succeeding coach Rudi Garcia, with him set to sign a contract extending until 2028.
The Belgian national team did not perform as expected during the 2026 World Cup competitions, exiting the tournament with a loss to Spain in the quarter-finals, at the same time the team suffered a decline in level under Garcia's leadership.
Van Bommel as coach of the Belgian national team
The newspaper "Nieuwsblad" reported that Mark van Bommel, aged 49, will be the new coach of the Belgian national team, with the Dutchman signing a contract extending until the 2028 European Championship.
The newspaper clarified that the Belgian Federation reached a final agreement with Van Bommel to take over the technical management of the national team, which included financial aspects and members of the Dutch coach's technical staff.
The report indicated that the technical staff may include a Belgian coach, although details remain unknown about the potential name to join Van Bommel.
The coach has previously been linked with coaching Al Ahli on more than one occasion, and Al Ahmar held several negotiations with Van Bommel previously, but they were not successful.
An interesting point
The aforementioned newspaper said that Van Bommel does not speak French, noting that the matter may not be warmly received in Belgium, which prompted the coach to improve his language in the coming period.
Although the coach is fluent in German, English, Italian, and Spanish, he intends to learn French in the coming period to facilitate his presence with the Belgian national team.
