Morgan wrote on his "X" network account: "BREAKING.. Lionel Messi retires from international football after scoring 125 goals for the Argentina national team, ranking second on the list of top international goal scorers."

He added: "Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for the Portugal national team, the highest number in international football history.. This settles the debate over who is the greatest player of all time."

Messi wrote in an official statement published on his "Instagram" account: "After all this time since the final match, and after long consideration, I want to announce to everyone that I have decided to retire from playing with the national team."

He added: "It was a painful decision and it still pains me deep inside, but I realize that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave my all, not only during the recent years when we achieved everything, but before that as well. I always fought and exerted everything I had for this jersey, and to make you happy and proud to be Argentinians through football."
