Luka Modrić expressed deep shame over the loss to England, 7-0 in the UEFA Nations League.
England achieved their biggest victory ever by beating Croatia 7-0 in Matchday 3 of the UEFA Nations League.
Modrić told reporters: "No duels, no aggression, no mistakes, no unity. I have been here for 20 years, and I must say that I feel ashamed for the first time after a match."
He added: "You can lose, they were better, but to lose like this and destroy your reputation like this is unacceptable. For the first time in 20 years, I truly feel ashamed."
He continued: "From the first minute to the last, playing like this, this is not how football should be played."
He emphasized: "Even if we had played with fewer players, we could not have played like this. It looked as though we were playing with four or five fewer players. A disastrous night."
He concluded: "Playing like this is unacceptable. If we had been playing against a third-tier team, we would have lost. There is no point talking about tactics because everything starts with desire, will, fighting spirit, aggression, determination, and duels."
The Croatia captain was speaking after making his 205th appearance for his national team, a historic milestone that instead became the backdrop to one of the most painful nights in Croatian football history.
