The Mexican Football Federation announced the dismissal of the veteran coach Javier Aguirre from his position following the elimination from the 2026 World Cup tournament.
Aguirre left the coaching of Mexico after the end of his third term, following the loss to England with a score of (3-2), which ended Mexico's path in the World Cup.
Mexico announces Aguirre's departure and the appointment of Rafa Marquez as his replacement
The Mexican Federation published on its official accounts on social media the following: "The next chapter in our long-term project begins now."
The statement added: "As part of the continuity of the process that started two years ago, Rafael Márquez takes the next step in the planned transitional phase by assuming the position of coach of the Mexican national team."
Meanwhile, Rafa Márquez stated: "Continuity of a story, with a long-term and transitional project, today a new phase begins for our team with you, Rafa, let's go together."

Aguirre had previously announced his departure from his position after the end of the tournament, expressing his confidence in the ability of Márquez, the former team captain, to complete the technical project he started, and to continue working with a group of players who regained their confidence and presented a distinguished level during the World Cup.
Aguirre stated at the time "I wished to bid farewell to the fans with a victory, but we did everything we had. I feel pain for the exit, but the players deserve praise, and I ask them to hold their heads high after giving everything they had."
The veteran Mexican added that he leaves his position with great pride, praising what the team achieved in restoring the spirit of belonging and identity, in addition to strengthening the relationship between the team and its fans.
Aguirre concluded his statements in this regard: "I wish Rafa Márquez all success, as he possesses the capabilities that qualify him for this task, and I am confident that he will achieve greater achievements than I did."
The 67-year-old coach supervised the training of Mexico in the third term during 34 matches, achieving 21 wins and 8 draws, and the team lost only 5 matches under his leadership.
