Mexico's national team finished the World Cup in ninth place, achieving its best results in the Mundial since the 1986 edition, surpassing a number of major teams, most notably Brazil and Germany.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the Mexican national team topped the ranking of teams that exited the tournament before the quarterfinals, after FIFA relied in the classification on criteria including points, goal difference, and goals scored.
The Mexican national team benefited from achieving a perfect record in the group stage by collecting 9 points, then defeating Ecuador in the round of 32, in addition to conceding only three goals and ending its campaign with a goal difference (+7), to occupy ninth place behind the eight teams that qualified for the quarterfinals.
Despite its loss to England in the round of 16, the Mexican national team outperformed Brazil in the final ranking, which exited the tournament against Norway, as well as Germany and the Netherlands, both of which left the competition early.
According to the newspaper, this achievement gives a major moral boost to the Mexican national team, especially since it was achieved on home soil, and enhances confidence in the team's ability to compete strongly in the coming years.
