Al-Shorouk, an Algerian newspaper, revealed the name of the new head coach of the Algerian national team, succeeding Vladimir Petkovic.
Petkovic departed after Algeria’s elimination in the Round of 32 at the World Cup.
The newspaper reported that Brahim Hamdani, the head coach of the Algerian U21 national team, is close to taking over the senior national team.
Brahim Hamdani led the Algerian team to a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games held in Italy a few days ago.
Algerian Football Federation officials met with Hamdani to begin negotiations for him to take charge of the senior national team after his return to the country.
Al-Shorouk highlighted the strengths of the expected coach for Algeria, stating, “Hamdani has been able to impose an attacking and disciplined style of play that has restored confidence in young Algerian football.”
The Algerian national team is preparing to enter the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin this September.
The Algerian team is in Group 9 alongside Zambia, Togo, and Burundi.
Al-Shorouk indicated that the official announcement of Brahim Hamdani’s appointment will be made next Saturday, following a meeting of the Algerian Football Federation.
The Algerian newspaper supported the validity of the decision by citing the Egyptian Football Federation’s announcement extending the contract of Hossam Hassan, the national head coach of the Egyptian national team, until 2030, as well as the South African national team’s appointment of national coach Pitso Mosimane to replace Hugo Broos, who departed after the World Cup.
Hamdani, 48 years old, played during his football career for the French clubs Caen, Strasbourg, and Marseille, as well as the Scottish club Rangers, before retiring in 2009.
Hamdani managed the French clubs Marignane-Gignac and Corbeil-Essonnes before moving to coach the Algerian youth national team.
