Argentine national team captain Lionel Messi was not content with breaking Miroslav Klose's record in the list of World Cup scorers, but he also made sure to make a special gesture toward the German legend, after promising to gift him a signed jersey following the historic achievement.
Messi reached 21 goals in the history of his World Cup participations, pulling five goals ahead of the tally Klose had held, after scoring against the Egyptian national team in the round of 16.
Klose revealed, according to the French newspaper L'Équipe, the details of the phone call between him and the Argentine star, explaining that Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, his former teammate at Lazio, arranged the connection between them.
Klose said: "It was the first time we spoke like this away from matches, and it was a very emotional call. Messi told me he would send me a jersey signed by him."
Messi and his teammates will face a highly anticipated match against Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, at 4 a.m. next Sunday.
