The Argentine star Lionel Messi continued to make history in the World Cup, after taking sole lead in the scoring charts of the current edition with 8 goals, becoming only five goals away from equaling or breaking the historical record registered in the name of the Frenchman Just Fontaine, owner of 13 goals in one edition of the World Cup.
Messi scored his eight goals during five matches, despite missing two penalties, and he could have reached 10 goals, while both Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland chase him with 7 goals each, while Harry Kane comes next with 6 goals, with the quartet continuing to compete before the start of the quarter-finals.
Messi needs to score five goals in the three remaining possible matches for the Argentine national team, in order to break the historical record set by Just Fontaine in the 1958 World Cup.
He also became the first player in the history of the World Cup to score in nine consecutive matches, raising his tally to 21 goals in 31 World Cup matches, which is the record in the history of the tournament.
