Media reports have revealed the status of a potential match between Real Madrid and Liverpool in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League for the new 2026/2027 season.

European clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League for the new 2026/2027 season are awaiting the draw ceremony, scheduled for tomorrow evening, Thursday, August 27.

Twenty-nine clubs qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League, while the identities of the remaining seven teams will be determined through the qualifying rounds, bringing the total to 36 teams, following the introduction of the new format two seasons ago.

The European governing body has issued a decision aimed at preventing the same match from being repeated in the league phase for three consecutive seasons.

The past two seasons featured two matches between Liverpool and Real Madrid at Anfield in the league phase, both of which ended in victories for the Reds.

One of the regulations of the UEFA Champions League for the previous season states: "The UEFA Executive Committee may determine alternative draw conditions in accordance with the principles established by the Club Competitions Committee, and may modify any draw conditions to avoid any restrictions related to decisions taken by the UEFA Executive Committee."

It added: "The UEFA Club Competitions Committee has decided on an additional condition that may apply to the UEFA Champions League draw for the 2026/2027 season, stipulating that no individual match between the same two teams in the same competition with the same home team may be repeated for three consecutive seasons."

In light of the new regulation, Liverpool could face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League league phase in the new season, but not at Anfield, rather at the Santiago Bernabéu.
