Lionel Scaloni, the technical director of the Argentine national team, commented with statements following their defeat in the final match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup edition on Sunday evening against Spain.
The "MetLife" stadium hosted the 2026 World Cup final match between Argentina and Spain, where the latter won with one goal to nil.
Scaloni said in statements published by the Spanish newspaper "AS": "I feel a state of sadness at the present time, but first and foremost I feel eternal gratitude towards those players as reaching here was very difficult".

He added: "We are great in victory and we want to be so in defeat, we must always remember what we have presented, we have given everything we have, I know that we have given everything on the field, I have a lot to say but there is no need to prolong".
He continued: "Honestly, Spain was better than us but I focus on what we have achieved so far, we have shown that we know how to lose, we accept things, I want to thank the fans and my team's players, I want to tell the country that we did everything we have".
He concluded: "We wished to win but I have nothing but words of thanks, you can play well or badly, but when you do your utmost like this, it is difficult to find any fault".
Regarding his future, as his contract ends at the end of December 2026, he said: "I will talk to the president, I have an idea of what I want to do, I will complete my current contract and then we will see, I feel that we need to think because I do not know if I will be able to carry out a task of that size, perhaps we should talk, grateful to the president for giving me that opportunity, and for being in that position".
He stressed: "I never imagined, all of us in the technical staff, that we would be in this situation, and to continue there are many things that must be done, especially rebuilding like this, it is unlikely to be repeated, this hurts me greatly".
The network reported that Scaloni uttered his last words in a broken voice, before leaving the press conference hall suddenly.
