Granit Xhaka, the Swiss player, expressed his sadness after Switzerland's exit from the 2026 World Cup, following the loss to Argentina.
The Swiss national team bid farewell to the World Cup after losing to Argentina (3-1) in the quarter-finals, in a match that saw the expulsion of Swiss player Breel Embolo.
Xhaka's statements after the World Cup exit
Xhaka said in statements after the Argentina match: "I think we were playing very well, in fact I felt that we were capable of achieving a better result".
He added: "But unfortunately this is football, it is a decisive decision that completely changed the course of the match, it is very painful, the laws are the laws and we cannot change them".
He explained: "But with this decision the referee ended the match, this is my opinion and I don't know what the referee could have done, but he shouldn't have done that".
The Swiss player concluded: "Breel Embolo is a very important player for the team, on and off the field. Of course, he was very frustrated and his eyes shed tears, he does not understand why he was sent off".
