The relationship between Mohamed Salah, captain of the Egyptian national team, and Hossam Hassan, the Pharaohs' head coach, became strained after Salah was substituted during the match against Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This followed Hassan's statement that the substitution was a tactical decision, before Salah left the national team camp.
