De Telegraaf newspaper reported that the Dutch defender is suffering from severe pain due to a foot injury sustained on Sunday during the match against Serbia.
Van Hecke attempted to participate in the final training session of the Dutch national team on Wednesday morning before traveling to Greece, but he was forced to leave the training quickly.
According to the report, the Dutch defender will return to Tottenham as a precautionary measure.
No replacement player will be called up.
The Dutch national team will travel to Thessaloniki with a squad of 23 players to play the match against Greece.
The Netherlands will conclude the international break on Sunday by facing Serbia in Eindhoven.
