Mateus had progressed through the Sporting Lisbon academy, before having successful experiences with Southampton and then West Ham, where he established himself as one of the most prominent young midfielders in the English Premier League, thanks to his defensive effort and ability to advance with the ball and contribute offensively.

Mateus has an impressive international record with Portugal's youth teams, before making his first appearance with the senior national team in March 2026, continuing to confirm his rapid development at both the local and international levels.

The player played 38 matches with West Ham, scoring 4 goals and assisting 4 others.
