Mustafa Azzam, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Football Association, revealed that the African "CAF" has closed the door to implementing the proposal to increase the number of clubs in the African Champions League and Confederation Cup tournaments next season, indicating that it was carefully studied for later consideration.
Mustafa Azzam, Secretary-General of the Football Association, said in statements via CBC channel: "I received instructions from the Federation President a week after the start of the World Cup to correspond with CAF and present this proposal, about two weeks before its official announcement."
He continued: "CAF sent us 6 days ago; I received a letter from the Secretary-General of the African Union informing us that our proposal was carefully studied, but there are special organizational conditions, and it will be considered for implementation starting next season, but the door has been closed regarding its implementation starting this season."
He added: "The proposal was not rejected, but the African Union has many problems; Egypt has its status, but there are pressures from 54 countries in Africa."
He explained: "CAF was blaming the federations for not sending requests to increase the number of clubs; the pressures after the World Cup are related to stadiums, competition, and the number of teams, and the postponement of the license date caused problems for some countries after holding the Cup final there."
It is worth noting that the African Champions League tournament in the 2026-2027 season will see the participation of Zamalek and Pyramids, while Al Ahly and Z will play in the African Confederation Cup competition.
