The Argentine defender Cristian Romero is heading to the Spanish capital Madrid, in preparation for completing his transfer from Tottenham, as part of the current summer mercato.
Italian journalist specializing in transfers, Fabrizio Romano, said today, Thursday, that Romero traveled tonight to Madrid accompanied by his agent, after obtaining permission from Tottenham, to undergo a medical examination with Atlético Madrid tomorrow.
The deal is worth 40 million euros including add-ons, with Tottenham retaining 15% of the value of any future sale of the player.

Atlético had reached an agreement with Tottenham regarding the signing of the Argentine defender, who is considered one of the most prominent demands of coach Diego Simeone to strengthen the backline.
Romero is expected to sign a contract with the Spanish club until 2031, after passing the medical examination, according to press reports.
Romero is 28 years old, and joined Tottenham in 2021 coming from Italian Atalanta, before becoming the team captain, and also contributed to the Spurs winning the Europa League title in 2025.
On the international level, he was a key element with the Argentina national team, which won the Copa America 2021 and 2024 and the 2022 World Cup.
