Ter Stegen will join Ajax at the request of coach Michel, the former technical director of Girona, who played a major role in convincing the club to sign the German goalkeeper.
The 34-year-old hopes to regain his form after a difficult period that saw him sidelined for long stretches due to injuries.
Ter Stegen played last season on loan with Girona.
The German goalkeeper lost his place at Barcelona to Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny.
