Sky reported that Maldini and Leonardo submitted their resignations after the failure to appoint Pirlo as coach of the Italian national team.
The duo informed the president of the Italian Federation, Giovanni Malago, of their decision to resign.
The duo worked for only 16 days in the Italian Federation, during the period from July 11 to July 17.
According to Sky, the Italian Federation is scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, to discuss the matter.
The Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport revealed the candidacy of Thiago Motta to coach the Italian national team, after the failure to complete the agreement with Pirlo.
Andrea Pirlo's name has been removed from coaching the Italian national team in the last hours due to his contract with a Russian betting company.
The position of technical director has remained vacant since Gennaro Gattuso's resignation following Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup this year.
